On June 29, 1988, at about 1:00 a.m. Alex Mago and Saldo Manuel were abducted by armed men in Poblacion, Vinzons, Camarines Norte. The victims were forcibly taken into a green tricycle.

Two companions of Alex and Saldo identified the owner of the said tricycle; however, the owner denied having driven the said vehicle on the day of the incident.

The two witnesses also disclosed that they recognized the abductors because they often see them in Labo and Vinzons but could not identify their names.

At the same time, other residents of Matango, Vinzons, who were at the Poblacion, saw members of ALSA MASA, together with the sergeant of the 246th PC Coy stationed in San Isidro, Talisay, pointing at the victims and the other residents of Matango. They did not know what could be the motive of their action.

In the afternoon of July 1, 1988, around 50 persons composed of the barangay captain, councilman, and residents went to Kalankawan Sur, Vinzons, to verify reports that the two victims were seen at the fishpond of Boning Visayas wearing only underwear and their hands tied.

The suspected perpetrators were also seen in the said fishpond. The wife of Alex asked permission to search the place; they were allowed to do so. However, they did not see the two, and they believed the two were already transferred to another place, based on the footprints found in the area.

The sergeant denied having the two in their custody; he even advised the families of the victims not to worry since they may return later.

A week before the incident, Alex Mago told his wife that in case he is abducted, the ALSA MASA members will be the ones to blame since they have a personal grudge against him.
