On July 31, 1977, Gerardo came home for the usual weekend with the family. After lunch he excused himself and told his parents he was on his way to "an important meeting." Little did they realize it would be their final farewell. Two weeks later, towards the middle of August, when Gerardo failed to come home for his weekend visit, his parents were notified by parents of Gerry's colleagues and friends that they all shared the same painful predicament: their children had disappeared. From the Task Force Detainees, they learned that six had in fact disappeared under the same or related circumstances, all within a couple of days of each other: Jessica Sales, with whom Gerardo was last seen in Novaliches on July 31; Modesto "Bong" Sison; Ramon Jasul; Cristina Catalla; and Rizalina Ilagan. A few months after their disappearances, the families of Rizalina Ilagan, Critina Catalla, and Jessica Sales received letters from the military in which they alleged that a document was seized from the papers of Jose Ma. Sision stated that the three were killed in a so-called "encounter" in mid-August in Mauban, Quezon. Yet to this day, the military continues to deny having any knowledge of their whereabouts.
